My Nursing Philosophy Essay
Nursing Philosophy
My name is Simon Belfort, and I am a committed nursing student who values peoples’ beliefs, opinions, education, and I am also a good listener. Over the years I have strived to acquire relevant knowledge in healthcare, especially in the field of nursing, that will help me achieve an enjoyable and life-fulfilling career. I have always developed the urge of pursuing a career in healthcare, either to become a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist because I believe that promoting the overall wellbeing and health of others is a personal calling and long-term goal. To improve the community’s safety and outcomes, nursing practice requires the integration of philosophical perspectives with nursing theories. My nursing philosophy focuses on providing holistic care to meet the physical, cognitive, social, economic, and spiritual needs of all citizens. This philosophy incorporates the four concepts of the nursing meta-paradigm, which include environment, health, person, and nursing (Decker & Hamilton, 2018). My focus is to give my best efforts towards tackling any health problems presented to me both within or without the healthcare facility despite the patients’ ability to cater for the services. I believe that the nursing profession is not just a profession to make profits like other businesses but it is a calling to help others in society stay healthy.
Concepts of The Nursing Meta-Paradigm
A meta-paradigm is a set of ideas that provide the framework of how disciplines and professions should function. For the case of a nursing profession, concepts are categorized into four basic concepts that address a patient in general, his wellbeing, environment, and responsibilities of nurses. The four primary nursing meta-paradigm point to a technique of care where an individual’s welfare is connected to four collaborating components (Mackintosh-Franklin, 2016). The concepts include person, environment, health, and nursing.
Person component focuses on the patient who is the receiver of healthcare services. Connected people also include family and other influential individuals to the patient. The concepts concentrate on the spiritual, beliefs, social and health care needs of the patient. Resulting health outcomes are associated with the interaction of the patient with the physical and social connections. My Nursing Philosophy Essay
Environmental component focus on the surrounding that affects the patient. It explains how the interaction of a person with the surroundings affects health and wellness (Reed, 2017). Communication with friends, family, as well as physical and social interactions like geographical location, economic conditions culture and technology are part of the environment components likely to affect the wellbeing of a person. According to this meta-paradigm component, an individual can make modifications to the environment to improve health outcomes.
Health component is a dynamic process that strives to eliminate diseases and maintain wellness. Health takes into consideration the ability to care for patients and help them cope with the disease. Health and wellness cover a person’s genetic makeup and life span, how the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing integrates into healthcare. These factors influence the patient’s state of wellness. My Nursing Philosophy Essay
The nursing component involves the delivery of proper healthcare services through a mutual relationship in a caring and safe environment (Decker & Hamilton, 2018). The element recommends the use of skills, knowledge, technology, collaboration, and communication to help reach the best possible patient outcomes.
The concept I would add to the meta-paradigm of nursing is person because the entire caring practice revolves around people. In addition to the four meta-paradigm concepts, the psychological component can be incorporated to help in the proper recovery of patients through the treatment process. The element involves changing of the patient’s mind to believe in the treatment procedures offered because healing starts with the mind. Therefore, convincing the brain to have faith in the administered medication is the first significant step towards proper recovery (Bender, 2018). The other three concepts work in collaboration to ensure adequate healthcare outcomes of patients. Therefore, the elimination of either one of them can lead to failure in the treatment and recovery process. This implies that all the four concepts are interdependent and elimination of one would lead to the failure of the entire healing process.
